Biologist / Wetland Ecologist

POWER Engineers, Member of WSP, is seeking an experienced Biologist / Wetland Ecologist to join our Eastern Biology Department.The position reports to our Columbus, OH office with the ability to work remotely within the state of Ohio. Employees may travel to a POWER office for periodic meetings.

Roles and responsibilities

The successful candidate will lead wetland and waterbody delineations, organize and summarize field-collected data, compile survey reports, and draft permit applications for ecological projects located in the Midwest while offering support to projects across the country. Candidates must be capable of working as part of a diverse and dynamic project team. Candidates must be physically prepared to work long days outdoors in variable weather and terrain. Projects will require frequent overnight travel to various locations throughout the region.

Responsibilities include but may not be limited to:

Completing wetland and waterbody delineations.

Conducting habitat assessments or wildlife species surveys.

Organizing field-collected data and compiling survey reports.

Implementing health and safety plans, coordinating schedules with the team, and interfacing with both internal staff (project managers, engineers, and other discipline leads) as well as client representatives.

Assisting our clients to develop and implement successful survey and natural resource permitting strategies.

Coordinating with agency staff.

Mentoring junior staff to develop technical skills for ecological survey and environmental permitting tasks.

Required Education/Experience

Bachelors degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or another related field

Three (3) + years of experience conducting ecological surveys

Strong analytical, time-management, and problem-solving skills

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Commitment to quality with solid attention to detail and organizing data and reports

Knowledge of the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineations Manual and appropriate regional supplements

Basic understanding of Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 404/401 permitting and Endangered Species Act (ESA) regulations

Experience in writing and managing the preparation of technical reports or permit applications

Valid drivers license and clean driving record

Must be willing and able to travel throughout the Midwest with potential for travel throughout the U.S. Up to 60% travel is expected

Preferred Education/Experience

Experience with a variety of biological and GPS data collection systems

Task or Project Management experience

Experience in botany, floristic quality assessments or other vegetative assessments

Experience with construction stormwater permitting and environmental construction inspection
